marinabrid Posted May 15, 2007 Report Posted May 15, 2007 hi all 1.9tdi 90 97 yeardoes anyone know if its normal what i will describei do 10 miles home each day and the temp gauge sits in the middle coming home tonight there was a very long slow que then temp gauge went up to 3/4 way up as we idled along for 3 mileswhen the jam cleared and we were running normal the gauge didnt seem to come back to the middle it stays up at 3/4 way up i would have though it sshould return to middle or am i wrong it didnt overheat or the fan come on and it hasnt lost any water just a bit confusing thanks Quote
Smilge Posted May 16, 2007 Report Posted May 16, 2007 Martin ....... mine has never gone up to 3/4, even climbing Dinas Middaw (a 1 in 5) where the Mondeo used to go in the red. I would give the system a good flush out making sure there are no air locks, change the thermostat, check the fan's running when its hot, check the radiator for hotspots and then the water pump to make sure the impellor hasnt become detached. tdi90 Posted May 16, 2007 Report Posted May 16, 2007 Our gauge on the TDi90 never gets past 'N', even when towing our caravan. Flush and re fill the system and make sure to bleed it properly. Quote
Justice Posted May 16, 2007 Report Posted May 16, 2007 I use to get that in my Sharan , it turned out to be a sticky thermostat. Quote
marinabrid Posted May 17, 2007 Author Report Posted May 17, 2007 the full story was coming home form hols 120 miles the turbo oil supply pipe got a hole in it and the oil seeped out the warning light came on for the oil with a mile to go so i drove home.i added 2.5 litres of oil and drove to work next day. car had not overheated at all during journey home or from work.then got it on ramps and found the split pipe we changed that pipe Quote
Smilge Posted May 17, 2007 Report Posted May 17, 2007 (edited) Good possibility Martin ...... trouble is they tend to seize open making the engine run cold. With you losing oil from the turbo oil pipe .... how long did you run the engine with it leaking on the way home from holiday? ..mmmm .... could have done some damage. I'm thinking head gasket ..that can cause the engine to run hot ...mmmmm.... Edited May 17, 2007 by Bleeno Quote
marinabrid Posted May 17, 2007 Author Report Posted May 17, 2007 well set of from skegness with full sump and got to leeds 120 miles at no time in journey did engine overheat on the gauge the oil light flashed as we came round a corner with a mile to go. got home but they dipstick was dry !!!! i added 2.5 l to refill it then came to work next day and fixed the pipe. the oil must have been dribbling out over the entire journey i reckon. odd thing it aint used no water though. mumof4 Posted May 17, 2007 Report Posted May 17, 2007 Quck question for you....when you put the oil in..does the oil light go out automatically? as ive just had to top my oil up again as my oil light came on this morning.but it didnt go off untill i had disconnected the battery after topping up. Smilge Posted May 17, 2007 Report Posted May 17, 2007 mmmmm ....dunno then Martin. One thing though you could try, when the engines cold start her up and run for a couple of minutes, but not long enough for her to get hot, then undo the expansion cap and see if you get a rush of air pressure then have a look to see if you have air bubbles coming up into the tank. I would still go for the stat to start with. Quote
marinabrid Posted May 17, 2007 Author Report Posted May 17, 2007 tried that no bubbles just the usual hiss of pressure escaping. odd Quote
Smilge Posted May 17, 2007 Report Posted May 17, 2007 Try changing the thermostat to start with as thats probably the cheapest option and pretty easy. Quote
